Is this possible?

Recycle Me!
I was looking around on Carracho servers, and on one of them, the admin stated that if anyone pisses him off, he'll wipe their hard drive, citing the fact that he can do so because he has their IP. I've been thinking about this, and it seems to me, to be quite impossible, but I'm not entirely sure. Any input?

Big talk. If he knew your IP - always and it wasn't dynamic, the most he could do was attempt to hack your machine. If you're running OS 9, this is the last thing you need to worry about. If under X, you're still pretty safe with a default install. If you've turned on FTP, etc. you're still pretty safe, and your system logs will tell you of any attempts to get access to your Mac.

Yea, just an idle threat. The closest that he'll get to erasing it is attempting to send you OpenThisToEraseYourHardDrive.exe.
But even then, you wouldn't be able to open it without Virtual PC :-/

i know your IP , its logged at the bottom right hand corner of your post, well i dont, but its not hard to find. Its not a big deal if someone were to know your IP. unless the tool box is a pimple faced , soda guzzling unix freak, theres really no need to worry. This topic brings me back to the days of "Progz" and "email bombs." hillarious sh*t. :p

" hey man, piss me off and ill use AOHELL to wipe your drive clean , and ill delete all your porn!"

besides everytime you log onto a carracho server it logs your IP. So its not like hes a l33t hax0r.

If you had Win95 or its derivatives he could - assuming that the IP is static. This actually goes down to the reason why I have a Mac: When I got my cablemodem I ditched Win95 and went to NT because of the zero security on Win95. (I tried just once to browse someone's HDD on the internet and succeeded rather too easily.)

However the prob with NT is that no peripherals work with it. So I got a mac - best of both worlds and some.
