iTunes 4

Androo

Yeah, Androo.
Hey, i've been hearing things about iTunes 4 coming out this summer with the new release of OS X (Panther 10.3). It will have a system preference, better support for ipod (i think that you will be able to take of songs from the ipod and keep it on your itunes library) and better sound quality (how can it get better?).

I highly doubt this part. There was a reason Apple disabled transferring songs from the iPod to the Mac. The sticker on the front of the iPod when you first get it new says it all.

"Don't steal music."

People could easily take literally thousands of songs to their friend's house and copy them over. I suppose Apple doesn't want this.

Maybe if you could register your iPod with the computer you wish to use it with, it might remedy the problem a bit...

Well maybe Apple will come up with some technology that lets you copy songs from iPod to iTunes for playing but not burning and not being able to get to the mp3 files. Like when you hook up iPod to a mac you see the songs but you can't do anything with them except play and organize.

You can already play iPod songs in iTunes, if that's what you mean.

I mean, you could drag a song off an iPods playlist into iTunes, eject your iPod and the song would still be there. But, like with iPod, you'd see the song but you can't do anything with them except play and organize. The user would have the song, yet not be able to copy, burn, or share it.

Does that make more since?

If the song is still playable after you unplug the iPod, it is on your HD somewhere, and someone will make a program that copies the song from its protected place to your iTunes library so you can share/burn/copy it. Automatically. And this cannot be prevented without some sort of DRM software, which I and many others (including Apple, it seems) are opposed to. Even if the files were re-encoded to a proprietary format and absorbed into one large file, you could still use Audio Hijack to get a non-copy-protected copy.

i've never used an iPod before ... but doens't it work just like a FireWire external Hard Drive?! ... Can't you open it up in the finder, and copy the files like you would with a "normal" hard drive?! *confused*

sheepguy42 : Yea but apple would be ok cuz they won't create the apps that extract the songs. Just like iPod

~~NeYo~~: The songs in an iPod are no where to be seen. You need a program to hack in and find them.

Yes, but from there you have no access to the mp3's, which are in a hidden area that you "need" to use iTunes or the iPod itself to access.
I say "need" in quotes because if you check out versiontracker.com, and search for "ipod," you will see many programs that can also access the hidden area and transfer those mp3s for you.

hmmm....iLife 2 would probably come out this summer then. If itunes 4 is rumored (i forget from where) to come out then, wouldn't they need to make a new version of iLife? I'm starting to thinks that Apple likes our money. A lot. More than a lot. A lot x 87 ÷ ?. That's a lot.

PLEASE APPLE, can't we have a new iTunes Library organization ?

Actual one, /Album/Title.mp3 is good.
/Genre/Album/Title.mp3 would be EXCELLENT.

all i want to see is more options for codecs - ogg, aac, or anything you want. im tired of big mp3 files... something that could batch encode all my old mp3's to a new format would be nice as well.

wow you're acting like apple is reading this right now. like their watching our every move....
i'm scared

Wouldn't it suck it they started charging for itunes? if they do that, then i will switch to audion.

thats ok then, had me a little worried, that there was no such hack ... cool ... if my loan app is accepted, i hope to have one shortly! .. my MD seems so old hat now ... (i've had it merely a year ...) ... and my Poor MD Deck on my stereo ... well... << wipes moths off >> :p

:D

What about the sharing of songs over a network. iCommune was a great app! It gives one the chance to keep his/her mp3s on a desktop and play them on ones powerbook/ibook anywhere in their house with a wireless network. I don't want to keep two copies of my mp3s on both computers.. What a waste of space. Until then I will continue to use icommune to listen to my mp3s on my ibook when i'm lounging around the house. However, I wish apple would include this in their own computer.

Another cool app I found for iTunes is Earphoria!! Look it up on versiontracker.

It allows you to control your iTunes on a desktop from another computer on your network using rendevous. So neat. I'm able to sit in bed with my ibook and listen to my mp3s through my stereo hooked up to my PowerMac.

Actually, with the iPod in Firewire Disk mode, you can view/copy the songs off it via the Terminal. There's a folder on there called iPod_Control - the mp3's are in a folder in that called Music.

The only reason you can't see these folders when you have the iPod in Firewire Disk mode is because they're "invisible" folders - like the fact you can't see the etc, private, var (and others) in the Finder, though you can see them with the Terminal.

You can probably add mp3s to it via the Terminal too, though I haven't tried it, so I dunno for sure. If you try it and mess up your iPod, don't go blaming me :p
