iTunes compatability problems

I'm on an Apple MacBook (Intel core duo) and recently had to reinstall my version of Mac OS X 10.4.8 after unsuccessfully trying to download a software update of OS X (can't remember which version) via the Software Updates window which pops up. The software seemed to download fine but as soon as the computer restarted nothing happened. It just stayed on the grey screen at the beginning and the small circle icon popped up but it didn't load up the operating system.

As a result I had to reinstall 10.4.8 via the CDs which came with the computer.
It just so happened that while the attempt was made to reinstall the newer version of OS X a newer version of iTunes was successfully downloaded (V 8.1.1). However this does not now work with OS X 10.4.8 and comes up with the message 'You cannot use iTunes with this version of Mac OSX.
How do I revert to an older version of iTunes so that I can play my music? I've been to the Apple website but they don't have any of the older versions of iTunes on there anymore and even some of the unoffical download sites don't seem to have it either. Very frustrating!

thanks
Rich

All you need to do is get the OS up to 10.4.11. Click on the Apple menu. Select software update. The OS will go online and check for available updates. It will show you the available updates and give you the option to install updates. If you click that option it will ask for your password. Type in your password and away you go. You will probably be given the option to restart after the updates are installed. Even when software update finishes check again by going through the above described process until it says "your software is up to date".

Hi there
Thanks for your reply. This is what I did before and it resulted in the computer not being able to load up the new version of OS X when I re-started. However many times I switched off and restarted it just kept on the grey screen.

Hi there
I just did this and it's done exactly the same process as the Software Update. I don't want to go through the hassle of having to install my CD version of OS X (I've done this twice now) and for iTunes still not to work. It seems there is something wrong with my computer if it's not going to install the new version properly. Any advice?
thanks

So you'd rather just nurse your computer along with an outdated OS and try to backdate your iTunes? That makes no sense. Did you try to manually install the update like I showed you and if so, what were the results? Do you have enough hard drive space left on your HD? Because perhaps that's why you are having these issues in the 1st place. Do you know how to check your available free space on the drive? Do you know about disk utility in the utilities folder and how to verify you HD, and if errors are found do you know how to repair those errors?

The Combined Updater has never given me problems when I've downloaded it manually and installed it manually. For major updates, I always avoid the Software Update as that's been known to cause problems. When applying updates, make sure the only thing you have connected to your Mac is the keyboard, mouse, and your network/internet connection if needed. Also, make sure you repair permissions and run any disk checks on the hard drive before applying the update.

Lately, all OS X updates require two reboots so you'll have to be patient. After the first reboot, it goes to the gray screen and sits there for a while. Then it reboots and starts the bootup process normally. When Apple first started doing this, many people thought something was wrong because of the extended time at the gray Apple logo screen. Some people then proceeded to force the Mac off, effectively corrupting their upgrade. I usually just let the update run and do something else while I wait, so I was rather startled when it rebooted a second time. But it's been the norm for some time now. I believe the two-reboot process have been introduced with 10.4.9, but I could be wrong.

Download the 10.4.11 Combined Updater for Intel Macs and then follow my directions above. You should be fine thereafter.

By not applying the update to 10.4.11, you're leaving yourself open to unpatched vulnerabilities on your Mac which can be exploited by malicious code on a compromised website (just one example). Things to consider...

Hi there
Thanks this worked a treat although I had to install a new version of Quicktime to make iTunes work. There is still a small problem. When I try and play tracks in the iTunes store it asks me for my iTunes password, which it accepts but then comes up with the following message:

We could not complete your iTunes Store request. A required iTunes component is not installed. (-42404).

What should I do to sort this out?

thanks

Have you tried manually downloading iTunes with QuickTime and installing it? Try that and see if the problem comes back.
