I am getting a "kernel panic" message when I try to sync iPod with iTunes.
(i.e., grey box on screen with words "You need to restart your computer...").
iTunes is version 7.
iPod is 5th generation (video), 60 GB, refurbished by Apple, 2 months old. Latest software version (1.2, I think).
iTunes library is stored on external LaCie mini drive, and contains 5,000+ songs from various sources (CDs, Limewire, bittorrent, etc.)
Problem has happened numerous times and now happens every time I try to sync. It typically craps out after transferring about 500 songs, but has reached as few as 100+ and as many as 1000+
Things I have already tried:
- restoring iPod
- transferring playlists manually (works to a point, but after a certain amount of time, same problem occurs)
- upgrading from iTunes 7 to 7.0.2
- ensuring AIFF files are all unchecked (it seemed to be crashing when it reached a certain playlist, which turned out to be 1400 bit rate AIFFs--thought this would fix it for sure--but no).
Thought about trying downgrading to iTunes 6, but am leary of any unpleasant side effects this might have.
Called Apple Support this morning, who were essentially useless (I suppose I was naive to expect the person on the line to be a technician... She didn't even know what a kernel panic is. Neither did I until a few days ago, but I don't work for Apple.) The Apple person suggested:
- disconnecting the printer
- disabling virus protection
- checking that disk mode works, to rule out iPod hardware issues
- reinstall same version of iTunes in case of corruption during downloading (but DISCOURAGED installing an earlier version).
Haven't had chance to try these yet, but my gut tells me they will fail to solve the problem. My gut is starting to tell me that it may be caused by corrupted or incompatible song files (I dragged a big bunch of new songs to iTunes last week, around the time the problem started)--but would this explanation make sense, technically speaking?
