have mac os 10.4.11. emptied trash and since then itunes not working properly. also lost some movies that had been saved in itunes. did upgrade of itunes software but no resolution.
when try to play something, get message saying that song cannot be played because original file cannot be found. however some songs do play.
when message asks if want to locate file, it cannot be found.

It's telling you what your problem, it can't be found.... iTunes generally tracks your files if you move them to anywhere on your computer if they are in the your library, so if they were in your trash it would still play them. It seems that you somehow put them in the trash and then deleted them.

Although, they might be in some ridiculous place so just search for them sometime, if you cannot find them then you are screwed.

That is the trouble. No one put the itunes library into the trash. And since we have been downloading music again to replace ones that cannot be played, the itunes library again was found in the trash. And again, how did it get there? There is only one user of the itunes and he never transferred the library to the trash. We are wondering if there is some sort of bug/flaw in the program itself. Seems that our son has also experienced the same problem with the exclamation marks all of a sudden showing up. Perhaps Apple should look at this and see if it is indeed a bug in their software.

Well iTunes has never just thrown stuff into the Trash unless you or someone told it to move it to the trash. Your problem is unique.

Now it iTunes go to the The itunes Preferences and when the Preferences window pops-up click on the "Advanced" tab. Here you can see where iTunes is told to put it's Library of music/movies.

Now if the Library is where you want (or after you move it) you have another step you have to do once moving the iTunes library. Back in that "Advanced" tab you point it THEN in iTunes you MUST go to the menu item "File", "Library", "Consolidate Library". This will fix permissions for the whole Library after the move.
