iTunes skips/lags

Anyone having problems with iTunes lagging or skipping when processing something, like working in Final Cut Pro, or something heavy on the processor. I know it's a problem with iTunes because i played a mp3 in Quicktime, performed the same task, and didn't have the same problem. I like to work with my music in the background, but if this will keep happening, I will be very disappointed with this latest iTunes release.
 
I had this problem when I first got my 15" iMac but then from then on it stopped (I think after I upgraded to iTunes 3). However, even though it hasn't done it since, I did notice it twice today (iTunes 4) and it annoyed me. It happened while I was quitting Safari.

Have you also noticed that iTunes is a CPU hog? At any given time it might take up something between 4-12% of the CPU.
 
yes, I noticed a slight increase in the cpu monitor. This might relate to why it abruptly stops at times, it continues to play, but there is no volume, then seconds later it starts to play normal again..
