iTunes why do you do this?

We have two macs (iMac and portable), we share iTunes music through airport. All was well and nice ::love:: until Airport Express arrived.

Express installed a new iTunes on our iMac- thats fine. Then Express breaks-down and is returned to shop. Now the problems begin :( .

Express installs a version of iTunes (certainly more modern, etc..) that is incompatible with the version of iTunes on our portable. To my memory, the installer DOES NOT INDICATE that the new version will NOT BE COMPATIBLE with older iTunes.

Now we cannot share music through airport anymore. I cannot install the new iTunes from the Express CD as I have already returned it to the shop.

1. ::evil:: I really think Apple would take the time to warn its customers when it changes software that communicates with its neighbours and the new release will not be incompatible to older version. Not doing this is really short-sighted.

2. The only choice I have now is to re-install the original iTunes from my iMac system disk  . I have never done this. Is this do-able, any advice welcome.

Thanks for the pointer ::angel:: . For some strange reason I though iTunes was not freeware so I never actually checked.

Still I would have appreciated some warning from Apples iTune installer.

I loaded the new iTunes from the web site and this solved the problem. Thanks for the pointer fryke

However, my position on the iTunes installer remains unchanged. Even if iTunes is free this does not mean it should not inform me that "music sharing" will not work with older versions.

Read the notes they present on screen before installing next time. It's stated in there. You probably just clicked right by them. They're usually right after the EULA text.

Most certainly I did zap through it. But, and this stands for all software editors, if at installation they are capable of making double sure I agree to the EULA, why isn't a similar effort made to ensure important changes are acknowledged. Furthermore, I did not read any obvious incompatibilty warning on the software download page.

I think we are slipping away from the subject which - thanks to forum input - was quickly resolved.

Cheers to all. ;)
