iTunes Won't Sync Mail/Address Book Contacts

Since updating to Lion, iTunes doesn't read changes to my address book (such as new groups or contacts) or sync them to my iPhone. This seems to be a common problem for a lot of people and yet I haven't found a reliable solution anywhere.

First thing's first: is the checkbox in iTunes checked for syncing Address Book contacts and Mail accounts?

I've tried unchecking it and syncing again, but that didn't work. Currently it is checked for both contacts and mail accounts.
