Jaguar Serial Number

Does anyone know what the serial number in Jaguar is being used for? Is that number possibly different between retail, scholastic, pre-release, and pre-installed versions of the OS?

Just curious
 
When you select "About this Mac" from the Apple menu and click twice in the area directly beneath the words "Mac OS X" (i.e. where the Version number is initially listed), you will see the serial number. I'm assuming after a few minutes reflection that it's the serial number of my machine, but I might be wrong.

Any ideas?
 
when you call up Applecare they ask you for your serial number for various reasons, thats about the only reason for it...
 
On the TFT model it's also cleverly printed on the inside of the CD tray lip (well the flap that comes down when the tray opens).

I guess that's so you don't have to boot to the OS to get your serial, hmm when could that be useful :p
