Kern Protection Failure

Safari keeps crashing--it has done so ever since I installed the latest OS X. I cannot do any word specific searches in a Safari document (i.e. using Command F to search for specific words in a web page). I receive a message saying Kern Protection Failure. This has been happening with a number of other applications as well. What do I do?

I haven't a clue what kern protection means.
