Kernel Panic After Installing 10.4.8

This isn't looking good thus far. Here's my situation; after installing the 10.4.8 update, I proceded to restart my computer. I thought all was well after hearing the start-up sound. However, I recieved an error with a kernel panic with what looks like an issue with the ACPI (APCI Maybe). I've tried going through the installation DVD and repairing the disk, but that however only returns that the disk was not repaired and errors still exist. I also have tried just simply re-installing 10.4 and then importing the existing accounts over, but this also fails early in the installation. I don't want to format my HD as I don't have any backups of my iPhoto galleries. Anyone out there experiencing this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
 
You may want to buy DiskWarrior to repair your hard drive, I've heard good things about it. Backup (via Target Disk Mode) if possible in case it gets worse.

I know that I can boot into Target Disk Mode by holding down Apple + T, but how would I go about accessing my iPhoto galleries from that? Or is that even possible at this point?
 
You'd need another Mac. If you connect your computer to another Mac while it's in TDM, it'll act like an external drive.
 
...at which point, you'll want to look in /Users/[john_doe_etc]/Pictures/iPhoto Library, and copy that entire folder out.
 
Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll have to give the TDM with another Mac a try a little later this week. I'll keep you posted!
