Kernel Panics Upon Shutdown

Hi Guys,

I've been having a recurring issue since the beginning of the year now. I have a 13inch macbook pro 2011 edition with the latest OSX, (updates included) of Mountain Lion.

This is what happens:

On intermittent occasions, when I go to shutdown my laptop, it will Immediately reboot not even a second later. (as if I issued a restart instead of a reboot). Then I get the message stating that "your laptop restarted due to an error" in like 5 different languages.

After which the laptop boots up normally, and when I log in after declining to reopen my closed programs, an error log shows up.

After looking through logs I discovered that these were kernel panics and removed any start-up programs from my laptop ( I discovered that both Google Drive and Dropbox were contributing to the issue. Now the only thing there is my Webroop anitvirus software which I need in order use my laptop on campus.

Has anyone experienced this before? I will post the error logs below. I've been on and off the phone with apple care and went to the Genius bar but they couldn't figure it out. So I want to try to figure it out on my own before I bring it back in.

Thanks in Advance

Start up log after kernel Panic

The culprit may be your "wonderful" antivirus software.
That's the clue when you see:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
com.webroot.driver.SecureAnywhere(104.0) ...

If you MUST use THAT software, and no other brands of AV software, then _verify_ that you have the most up-to-date version. There may be an automatic updater, or a "check for updates" in the menus for that software.

Another test would be to REMOVE your antivirus software (temporarily) to check if your system behaves better.
If there's really no change, even after uninstalling your anti-virus app, and the symptoms continue with the same kernel crash - then a good next step would be to download and install your current combined updater for OS X, which you can get here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659

The reason that's a good idea - the combined updater has been known for years to do some internal checks as it installs, and can often clear out strange problems that suddenly appear - and is worth trying.

Thanks DeltaMac,

I will try your suggestion(s) and repost in the future after confirming whether or not the problem still persists. If it happens to be webroot do you recommend any other antivirus flavor that you may have used in the past?

Just my opinion - all third-party AV solutions for the Mac cause more issues than they solve, mostly for performance - so I don't recommend any at all. You are much better off with nothing other than what Apple provides with the built-in xprotect, which is always there in the system, and updates itself automatically.
It's just unfortunate when schools, or businesses choose to be ignorant about how the Mac operates, and require antivirus with no real technical reason.
Please don't misunderstand - I don't believe that OS X is invulnerable - there are threats against the Mac, with a variety of different methods, and the various AV solutions do have SOME use, but they also tend to affect system performance, which can be a bigger annoyance than any virus/trojan that might be out there.
However, as I am still a realist about this, then I would suggest either Sophos antivirus, or ClamXav, which is open source (free).
Sophos seems to be more troublesome recently, from what I read at the various download sites, but I only install it to run a full scan a couple of times a year, then uninstall it after a few days. ClamXav is still a good choice, I think.

This may seem like a stupid question, but how the hell are They [Tm.--Ed.] going to know whether or not you are using anti-virus software on a Mac on a campus?

Other than that, I use Sophos which has only found virus attachments sent to a "catcher e-mail account"--used to catch and report/torment scam artists. 99.9973% of the time the "Super Anti-Virus" Yahoo! employs misses the attachment because it is compressed. So, in order for the PC user to get infected, he has to download it, THEN decompress it. Yes . . . I know there are anti-virus programs which can scan compressed files. My point is, this happens about once or twice a year. Even then, the only reason I would "check" the download is to report it. Most sane people simply delete the spam.

I have not had a problem with Sophos but, really, there is no need for it. Only if I take this axe handle and start hitting myself on the head until I think U2 is a band worth listening to would I ever consider forwarding an e-mail to someone else. That is about the only danger I can see for the Mac user, sending beastie to someone else with a PC: "Hey, the FBI in Lagos is sending me a Fed Ex form because I apparently won the Irish National Lottery. Do I need to fill it out in Helvetica?"

Other than that, I have helped a few who . . . um . . .
e9677b70.gif
downloaded A Necessary Codec so they could . . . you know . . . view "educational videos" that for some reason involve whipped cream and Your Mom [Stop that!--Ed.]. Such is a Trojan that can do all sort of things mentioned in the "Virus" thread--such as redirecting--DNS Changing--to other . . . um . . . "Educational Video Sites" . . . some without Your Mom.

:)

So, really, if there is no way of them knowing you are running the thing on campus, I would not bother. Another thing you could consider--if they check this--is sitting down with whomever is a Power That Be in IT on campus to explain the situation. Even send him HERE.
