Is this normal for the kernel_task to take so much RAM. Here is what top shows

top -Fs20 -o-rsize -S

PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #PRTS #MREGS RPRVT RSHRD RSIZE VSIZE
0 kernel_tas 0.0% 14:22.04 46 2 1183 21.7M 0B 207M 1.17G
3955 firefox-bi 0.0% 3:31.13 10 187 626 75.6M 48.1M 104M 405M
1769 Adium 0.0% 0:56.45 7 158 481 78.8M 26.2M 71.9M 336M

PhysMem: 271M wired, 339M active, 859M inactive, 1.44G used, 577M free

Not sure why it should have these high numbers...
Any help would be helpful

thanks.

This was my first quesion when i got my first mac.

Mac uses ram differently then windows. When you close a program competly, it still holds onto the programs a little in memory which allows it to boot faster the next time you open the program. Don't worry, Mac OSX is smart enough to release memory when it needs it to use it for other programs to use it.

Macs theory: if you have ram, you might as well use it to your advantage however windows says use as little as possible.

Hope that answers your quesion
