kextcache quit

Tried searching for this, but I got an error.

I HAD a Pismo Powerbook with OS 10.4.11. It had two partitions--one for OS X and one for OS 9. I had a HP scanner that only ran on OS 9. I also had Norton Firewall 3.1.

So . . . upgrade to MacBook: 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. OS 9 not supported on Intel processor, so I dumped--I thought--the Norton and the HP software. All other software I had worked for both or I upgraded. I am still on OS 10.4.11.

When I boot, I will get this crash report:

The application kextcache quit unexpectedly.

[Date and Time of Quit]

When I dismiss the report, I notice no other problems or conflicts.

The Intel Mac Book will not have any Classic support because of the chip change.

Also get RID of any Norton products because Symantec gave up on OS X intel years ago right around since Tiger came out. That is why you are getting that error.

If you want really great firewall protection use either NoobProof or WaterRoof. Either of these will be the strongest firewall in OS X you can get. Both of them are free too.

Thanks. I thought I was adding to my original question with the actual crash report--ended up creating two threads I see.

Is there a list out there for Norton "crap" on a computer. What I mean by that is I have uninstalled it, then manually hunted for and removed more files, but there is often more there. I did a search for "sym" files--and posted it on that thread--and found:

SymAppKitAdditions
SymAppKitAdditions.framework
SymBase
SymBase.framework
SymHelpScripts.pkg
SymInstallExtras.pkg
SymNetworking
SymNetworking.framework
SymSharedFrameworks.pkg
SymSystem
SymSystem.framework

I do not know if any of those are Norton files.

Thanks for the recommendations on Firewalls. I was given DoorStop and have Little Snitch which are probably enough for anyone, but the freeware you suggested looks good. Norton was good for OS 9 then initial OS X, but as you note, it is obsolete for Mac now. It and a driver for a HP scanner was ALL I had left from non-Intel program. I have hunted down and updated everything else I could find.

Ultimately, this crash report is an "annoyance." I have not noticed anything "wrong" with the computer.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Well, I just did that . . . it found a lot of files . . . and all of those files I listed are now gone! Thanks!

Will see if that takes care of the problem.
