Keyboard hangs on login after wakeup

- OSX 10.4.8
- 15" PowerBook: 1.5 GHz ppc G4
- 768MB RAM.

Problem:
Keyboard and mouse don't react on input for about one minute after the login window appears.
This happens after the computer has woken up from sleep.


Has anyone experienced the same?
Has anyone got a solution?
 
It seems like this happens only when the battery is removed, and the laptop is supplied with power from the adapter only.

I changed my battery the other day, and login seems to work normally again.
