Hi All,

I'm using Yosemite 10.10.1. Keychain fails to open, then I get the message: "Keychain access cannot be opened because of a problem."

The top part of the Details section looks like this:

Process: Keychain Access [321]
Path: /Applications/Keychain Access.app/Contents/MacOS/Keychain Access
Identifier: com.apple.keychainaccess
Version: ???
Build Info: KeychainAccess-550040000~4
Code Type: X86-64 (Native)
Parent Process: ??? [1]
Responsible: Keychain Access [321]

Date/Time: 2014-12-14 14:05:12.829 -0500
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.10.1 (14B25)
Report Version: 11
Anonymous UUID: 7D91A58A-167A-CA05-3331-0B233E5639D7

Crashed Thread: 0
Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000

If I right click the Keychain icon it says it's version 9.0.
I ran Repair Disk Permissions, then rebooted. No help.

Use the Go menu at the top of your desktop and select Home. Now open Library then Preferences (NOT PreferencePanes). In Preferences it will be easier to scroll through the file titles if they are in alpha order by Name. Now scroll down to locate the files com.apple.keychainaccess and delete them.
Restart, empty the trash, and now give Keychain a test run.

Were you able to open it before upgrading to Yosemite? Or did this start after you updated to 10.10.1? Did you change your user login password?

You could download the latest update (10.10.1) and re-install it. The re-install will not hurt anything, but just may correct the issue with a component that wasn’t installed correctly from the App store. Here’s the link for the direct download:

Another thought:
From the Info window of Keychain Access - make sure it is not locked (in General section) and the system has Read & Write privileges in Sharing & permission.

If you need to make adjustments, you need to click on the small padlock in the lower right corner, enter your password, then make the corrections.
