killing hanging startup processes

my powerbook had some disk corruption which was causing the thing to hang at "Starting Network" and "Starting Appletalk" during bootup. being a NetBSD person, I frustratingly hit ctrl+c which cancels/quits/stops running jobs in unix. I expected nothing since this doesn't work when OSX is running, but apparently this combo works during the bootup.
