When I turn on my laptop i book g4, it will not take me to my login screen. The grey screen with the apple logo remains and nothing happens and I'm stuck staring at this screen until I turn off my computer. The little circle symbol under the apple symbol that indicates that the computer is starting up is also absent. Please write back soon sincce i need immediate help thank you

Have you tried holding down the Shift key when you hear the Macintosh startup chime? THis will boot that Mac into Safe Mode which will also perform a disk check and repair in the background. See if that gets you to the login screen. If so, run the Disk Utility, run a repair on the hard disk and repair permissions, and then reboot as normal. Hopefully this will work.

yea, but nothing happens even if i Hold down the shift key...it takes me to the grey screen with the apple and nothing else on it...

Out of curiousity, what were the last things that happened before you turned it back on and got the gray screen?

OK, do you have the installation discs that came with that iBook? Boot from those and run the Disk Utility and repair the disk and permissions.

If that doesn't work, then you might have to do a reinstallation. THe good thing is that you can do an Archive and Install which preserves your documents and data but only replaces the System folder. This means that you owuld have to perform the updates once again. Might I recommend downloading the Combo Updater for the latest version of OS X that you have? For example, if you're running 10.3, download the 10.3.9 Combo Updater manually from the Apple website. If it's 10.4, then download the 10.4.9 Combo Updater (make sure it's the PowerPC version!). I've had better results with a manually downloaded updater than updating through Software Update.

Also, make sure that whenever you perform updates that the only thing connected to your Mac is your keyboard and mouse. Since this is a laptop, just leave everything else unplugged when performing updates.

Hope this helps.

Try the disk repairs first. The reinstallation is last resort. Report back with the results. :)
