Large file sizes in Illustrator CS or CS2

I'm a print production artist and have been working with Adobe products since they were first developed back in the 80's. I've searched the forum and can not locate any related discussions about this problem I'm having.

I've been having a problem with large files sizes in both Illustrator CS and CS2. It's acting like I'm embedding images rather than placing them as link files. It's also happening randomly. I'll be working on similar items and the main difference will be a placed image, each are roughly about 30mb. The files will be save the same way, but one Illustrator CS file will have a file size of about 1.9mb and the other will have a file size of about 33mb. Then lets say I open the smaller Illustrator CS file, replace the image with the same image used in the larger Illustrator CS document, do a save as and pow, it's smaller just like the original. So it has nothing to do with the different images. The other thing that is odd is that the larger Illustrator CS file was created from the smaller one to begin with. I've tried turning off PDF compatibility and all I get are reduction of about 3mb, so that's not really a fix.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm stuck.

Thanks,

Jason
