Laserwriter 300 & OS X

Dear Forum:

I have a Laserwriter 300. I have a G4 466 running OS 10.2.6. I know that officially speaking serial printers are not supposed to work in OS X. LocalTalk printers, such as Laserwriter 630, will work with a LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge.

When I was purusing http://www.linuxprinting.org/, I checked their OS X section. In this section, I found reference to an Imagewriter which has been made to work in OS X. The Imagewriter, like my Laserwriter 300, originally used QuickDraw as its printing language. Theoretically, if the Imagewriter can work, the Laserwriter 300 should be able to do so.

Any feedback on where I can go to continue my research would be greatly appreciated.

Roland :)

I haven't tried this with a non-postscript, serial printer, but,
I believe Ghostscript and CUPS will do what you need (raster image conversion and printer driver).
CUPS installation was fairly easy for me -- don't know about Ghostscript.

Welcome mac6360 (and gsahli if no one has welcomed you yet)!

CUPS is the Common Unix Printing System that OS X uses. Look for GIMP Print, an open-source project (free download) that includes hundreds of printer drivers.
