Is the G3 running OS 9? (Oh, ya, I see it is.)
If so, you might be better off connecting the G3 to ethernet, and share the printer via appletalk using the Appletalk Bridge Control panel. I have a 4/600 shared this way.
Eventually, you should replace the switch with a router for security and better/simultaneous ethernet sharing.

The G3 is running OS 9, and im an apple virgin so if you could explain how i would do that in relation to my current set up?

The G3 is currently connected via ethernet to the router?

Many Thanks

Connect an ethernet cable from G3 to switch. Connect the printer to G3 with a localtalk cable (maybe you've got this already?). Install the Localtalk/appletalk Bridge software (download from Apple). Turn on localtalk bridge and restart. Add the printer on the other computer.

Oh, is your switch an extension to an already present router?

Ye the switch is an extension of a switch which is connected to a server which is connected to a router!

Ill try what you said about bridge thing saturday!

You can get an Ethernet to localtalk box to make he printer a network device that plugs right into the hub/switch. Then you don't need any computer to "control/share" the printer -- all computers will be able to print to it over AppleTalk.

Asanté makes such a device and it's called the AsantéTalk: http://www.asante.com/products/CardsAdapters/AsanteTalk.asp

I use a 4/600 in this way.

I guess I looked at the graphic. And further I'm not familiar with the Farallon product.

Perhaps he simply needs to stop attempting to "share" the printer with the OS and simply add the printer on all machines via AppleTalk. Or, perhaps the Farallon or the printer simply need a power cycle in order to get them responsive again.

You're right, I skipped over solving the Farallon-not-working issue. I guess because I have one, and like the Asante, they're getting unreliable because of changes Apple has made to appletalk -- frequent reset/power cycle to get them recognized by OS X.

So, sharing from OS 9 is my preferred route.

Hope this help!

Does the farralon do the same as the assante thing becuase theres one (an asante)ending on ebay soon whcih im tempted to bid on?

Farallon and Asante do the same thing - bridge to localtalk. If I'm not mistaken, yours (iPrint) is the newest one of those that anybody made.

Apple has changed appletalk to working only via ethernet, AND it no longer broadcasts "who's out there" to other appletalk devices (except once at startup, or something like that). So, what happens is that these bridge devices are "forgotten" by OS X - that's the symptom you have. You should be able to turn off/unplug power to the printer and Farallon, wait 20 secs, repower and then Re-ADD the printr in Printer Setup and print until the next time it happens again.

An additional problem I have with my Farallon ethermac (before your iPrint) is that it's made for 10BaseT networks only -- when I changed a hub to a switch (which auto-senses 100/10 speed) in my network, the Farallon locked up because the switch thinks it is 100 speed. I can either buy an old hub (don't want to go backward) or share the printer from an OS 9 computer.

Hope this helps.

Farallon had the iPrintSL and the iPrintLT.

The iPrintLT is the one to be used for a Laserwriter. The iPrintSL won't work.

bobw - thanks - I had forgotten that they made that other (serial?) model

rammyboy - Yes, in theory that should work. Just keep in mind the occasional reset that may be required.
And if it doesn't work, you, too, may need a 10BaseT hub in between the switch and the Farallon.
