Left arrow doesn't collapse a thread in Finder/Pathfinder

In List view: Right Arrow opens a folder but Left Arrow doesn't do the opposite once I'm down the list. Seems illogical. Go forward, go backwards. Right, left. How simple is that? Is there any way of doing this like the way Windows Explorer works? I've tried every conceivable key combo but nothing works. I have to use the time wasting mouse to "click" the arrow or the Up arrow to get to the top, then the left arrow to collapse the thread.

Please don't even start about the mouse and how its "not slower than the keyboard". Maybe if you have the coordination of a retarded sloth with Parkinsons (no offence to those with Parkinsons!) its really quick. But for most of us, by the time the mouse hand has hopped from keyboard to mouse, the keyboard shortcut has already been done. Then one would have to navigate the mouse to the item, click it, and hop back to the keyboard. Just say no to rodents...:) Bring out the exterminator.

Have you tried the "Columns" view? This will enable you to do almost exactly that, just with a different view of the files.

Other than that, I do not know of a way to get Finder to change its behavior.

I use Column View a lot. But I'd like to be able to collapse folders instantly in List View like Windows Explorer does. There are advantages to both views and they both have their functions.

I just don't think that's possible. "like Windows Explorer" isn't something that the Mac does -- sure there are similarities, but this isn't Windows Explorer and isn't supposed to operate like Windows Explorer (although I do agree with you it certainly would be convenient if it did mimick certain aspects of Windows Explorer).

Have you checked out the 3rd-party Finder replacement "PathFinder?" I hear a lot of people love it. Haven't had much experience with it myself, but it may do what you're looking to do.
