Leopard partially lost an account

Today I installed Leopard on an older G4 iMac in update mode - no problems, aside from being a bit slow to install and index, but then it was fine.

Buoyed by this I decided to perform an update install on my daughter's first-gen Intel iMac. That did not go as well. After the main install was complete and I was attempting to install XCode and some other stuff, her account 'disappeared'! I was logged in under her account, ut it would not accept her password, and her name was no longer in the menu bar. I switched (leaving her logged in) and logged in under my admin account, and the account was indeed no longer there! But the underlying account still existed - and I was unable to add the count again as it claimed eithe the long or short name was already in use by another user, even after a reboot.

Also I found that NetInfo is no longer available - but I cannot recall the replacement.

Is there some way to recreate her account using the existing system entries?
