Leopard Time Machine Issue

Leopard so far is working great. The main reason I upgraded was for time machine. The challenge I'm having is that TM will not complete a backup to my external drive. It's been running for 12 hours and hasn't finished.

My external drive is a WD MyBook Premium Edition II 1tb. Anyone else having similar issues?
 
How large is the data that must be backuped? Maybe patience will be rewarded.
It's only the first backup run which will take long.
