lexmark scanner keeps quitting

I use Mac OS 10.5.1 and I have a Lexmark X1185 scanner. The preferences are scant. I mainly need to scan black text but it defaults to b&W photo and I cannot change it in the preferences. The problem is that When it goes through the initial scan process and the image pops up on my screen, ready to apply any settings and do the actual scan, I change it to "black text" and it quits. It doesn't happen every time but when it does, the same page may quit 4 or 5 times before finally working correctly. It wastes a lot of time. Any suggestions? Is there a patch or something?
