Lines on screen

Started with 1, now there are 27 vertical lines on the screen - this interferes with photos and is unbelievably annoying. How do I get rid of them?
 
It sounds as if either the video card or possibly your monitor is failing. If you have the Apple Hardware Test that came with your Mac try booting that and running the extended test suite and be sure to run the video test for at least five complete cycles or until an error is reported.
 
What computer is it? The iBook's are notorious for a failing video chip, so you may have to provide a little more info.
 
I have an iMac 4,1 using Version 10.5.7 -it is getting worse! Am about to try the Hardware test. Will report.
