I need some help configuring a Linksys Wireless Router for use with iChat/iSight.

My brother-in-law is on a wireless network (Cable Modem / Linksys Router / Titanium PowerBook). When we tried to initiate an audio/video chat but were unable to make a connection. I have been successful chatting with others (A/V) so I am prettry sure its his system.

He checked the firewall settings in Panther—they are off. I had him connect directly to the cable modem and everything worked.

I suspect that there are firewall settings in the router that need to be changed. I found a document on Apple’s website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208) that discusses the need to open certain ports but I am not sure where to do this in the Linksys setup (I know how to get into the setup but not sure where to go within the setup up). Does anyone have a step-by-step guide?

The router in question is a Linksys 54G.

I'm not sure about Links wireless routers, but the wired setup page is 192.168.1.1 in a browser. The name doesn't have to be filled in, the password is "admin". If you get the setup page this way on that router, click the Advanced tab, then the Forwarding Tab. Forward the ports that you saw on the Apple page to the machine being used.

Check the IP Addresses also. Try and reset the router and modem (unplug it) reboot both systems and see what happens. I have this problem with my linksys sometimes. When it freaks out I get an internal IP address. 192 etc. Also try moving the router to a different place it may be causing interference with your modem.

Um, you already found the problem. If you checked out the Apple Discussions from the past you'll see most everyone is having problems with Apple software and Linksys routers (I know I was one of them). Well, after many suggestions and port openings (using the Port Forwarding in the Linksys router by the Apple guidelines) and trying different Linksys firmwares my problems became a little better but was hit or miss on each connection (using iChat & Apple's Backup (which is part of .Mac)).

So I bit the bullet and bought a different brand of router (D-Link and family has a NetGear) and I have had NO problems since! I hate to break it to you like that. It's just seems Apple Software and Linksys routers do not like each other.

However, this is just been my experience. You may find better luck.

Lastly, you probably have to turn on Port forwarding in your routers.
