Linksys Router Question

I have a BEFW11S4 Wireless-B router from Linksys. Just wanting to to use my pc work laptop downstairs, etc. However, it seems that once I get it connected and configured, it works fine until I close a web browser or put the computer to sleep. After that, it won't work.

I have OS 10.4.3. It was suggested that I download the latest firmware and that might solve the problem.

Ah, here's the problem: the downloaded file is a .bin. It won't open. Any free software that will open it; any other suggestions?

FYI-- I have comcast cable internet. Thanks.

Hi GMulholland and welcome to the forum.
Your text was slightly confusing. Is it your pc laptop that looses the connection or a mac with 10.4.3? However it is, I would (if possible) connect the computer to the router using an ethernet cable. Just to check, if the problem is wifi related or not.
And about updating the firmware: Make sure you have a stable connection to your router for some time (it is strongly recommended to use the ethernet connection). Open a browser and type in your routers interface adress or ip (consult the linksys manual for that). Now, get to the section where you can upload the new firmware. Before that, be sure it is the right firmware. After you uploaded the file the router will restart. And there you go with the new firmware and hopefully have a stable connection from now on.

Sorry for the confusion.

The cable modem is connected to the router via ethernet. The router is then connected to the iMac via ethernet, too. It is the iMac that loses connection.

So, the problem is not wifi related.
Make sure all your network settings are set to automatical and not specified anyhow (IP, Routers-IP, subnet...). Test if you loose your connection to the wan (internet) or to the router. How to do that? Open the routers interface over your web browser (this is where you should check the manual how to do that; it's either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.100 or something else). Put your computer to sleep and wake it up again. Now test if you can still log into the routers interface. I think there is a problem with your wan-settings on the router. You should check them and make sure there is no "disconnect after.." time (if you desire so). Also make sure your dhcp on the router is set correctly and won't get confused once you declare the same ip to two different computers.
Btw, did you successfully update the firmware?

the bin file shouldn't be a problem. You'll need to upgrade the firmware through the router's web interface.

1) Download the firmware from the linksys site.
2) Access the router's web interface: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
3) Click on Administration > Upgrade firmware.
4) Click on the browse button and find the downloaded file and your done.

Hope that helps.
