Little dot in red button

As we ALL know, the standard red close jewel has a little cross in it when you put your mouse over it. But why do some windows have a black dot in them all the time? It happens in some Word windows but not others. And it happens in the smaller apps like calulator.

the little black dot is there to show you that whatever document is open hasn't been saved yet since the last change ...

no idea what's up with your calculator.app ... mine doesn't ever have a black dot ...

Terminal also uses the black dot to signify there are active processes.

Anytime the black dot appears in any application, it signifies an active process.

Oh and I was wrong. The calclator DOESN'T show a dot

Yes, it does; it's just that it can't do anything that will occupy any hardware on which OS X runs for more than a fraction of a second. All Cocoa applications will show the dot.
