Log in, log out immediately. crash?

i can log in, however when the screen changes like it would normally to go to my background, i am logged out immediately back to the log in page.
I have tried to log in on safe mode with no success, also >console - i can type my username but not my password. Has it crashed? if so/if not what can i do?
 
Sounds like something went really wrong. By YOUR description it could be software or hardware that has stopped working.

What version of OS X are you running? Have you tried to fix it by running in Single-User mode and run fsck (file system check)?
