Logging into an SGI over serial

I've got an SGI Indy but so far I don't have a compatible monitor for it so I've been trying to terminal into it over a serial connection but I haven't been able to get it to work.

I've got the Indy linked with a standard Mac serial cable and a Keyspan USB adapter. The Keyspan drivers are installed and I've tried using ZTerm to connect with 9600, 1 stop bit, no parity.

Has anyone managed to do this on osx, or with IRIX from any machine? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Craig

You need a null modem cable; for more info, check this and read the first few results.

I recommend trying to find a null modem adapter (or the specific cable) rather than trying to build your own cable. Soldering those mini-DIN connectors is a PITA. If you insist on "rolling your own", all you need to hook up are the RD, TD, and SG pins; you don't need any of those hardware flow control pins.

I haven't done this in OS X, but provided you have the correct cable, it works fine (and your terminal settings look right).

Good luck.
