Long File Names

OK, this is annoying. I STILL can't create a long file name over my network. I have to create it locally and then send it over. Is it just me, or is this simply a limitation right now?

Actually, if I understand you correctly, I believe it's an SMB limitation. Sorry if I misread this....

You might want to provide more detail.

What is the OS is the remote host running? What file sharing protocol?

The only problems I've had with file sharing and long filenames, is appletalk shares. I've never been able create/copy a file with a long name onto a remote hosting running either: atalkd (linux), PC Maclan (Windows) or File Sharing for Mac (Windows 2000 advanced server). I've never had problems with SMB remote shares though.. pretty pathetic actually when SMB shares work better than Apple shares.

Local machine and server machine are both Macs running Jaguar.

Connection is TCP/IP thru afp (I think, I don't know what I'm talking about).

I only use SMB to connect to our PC.

I'd have to say it's a limitation of AFP then, because I've never been able to create or copy a file with a long name using AFP to a remote share. It sounds like Apple has patched Jaguar's AFP implementation to allow long-file name copying, but not file creation.. You've gotten farther than I have.

Personally, this should have been addressed when 10.0 came out because once Apple does update the AFP implementation, it's going to take time for other companies to update their implemenations as well.

Atleast it's good to know that they are working on the problem, even if they only have it partially working.
