Looking for a recommendation

Im in 3 different clubs that always have events and meetings each month on different days or sometimes the same day. I recently made the bonehead move of going to the wrong event on the wrong day, and missed the real event.

I want to have an ongoing reminder list that I can put the upcoming events, dates, and locations into, that will somehow PASSIVELY display it all the time on the desktop. In OS9 I used to use a sticky on my desktop, and just paste events into the bottom as they were scheduled, and erase them from top after the event.

Calendar is just too much work for such a simple thing, or I would intuitively use it already.

I have seen one "Checkbox" app that seems to do this, but it doesnt meet one of my criteria... must be FREE!

Any other recommendations?
