I have a T1 coming to my house and the T1 router is heat sensitive. I usually let my house get up to 85 degrees (I'm in Austin). But with the T1 router, I can't. I am not keeping the upstairs at 79 and I have a fan blowing on the router all the time. My electric bill went from $150 to $250. I don't really believe it was just the change of temp because it has been rather cool the past month.

But, it is clearly costing me something. So I have a couple of ideas but I can't figure out how to implement any of them.

One idea is to buy a small refrigerator and keep the T1 router in it. My fear is that the 40 or 50 degree temperature that most refrigerators keep will be too cold. Is that possible? Can I find one that keeps the temperature at 75 degrees?

The other idea is to move some of my equipment from the study to a large closet I have. The closest is suppose to be for a darkroom and eventually my equipment room. It is about 6x12. I can put a window unit AC in the darkroom and it would exhaust into the attic (not to the outside). I am not sure if that would work because the attic is so hot it may not cool the refrigerant down enough.

Any other ideas or ideas of how to get these to work would be appreciated.

Thanks for the ideas

Instead of a refrigerator, try a wine refrigerator (available at Home Depot or Lowe's or a similar store)... they usually have an adjustable thermostat for red wines, which are kept cool but not cold. I bought one for a friend one time and we could set it at a cool but not chilly 60 degrees (F, of course).

Another option may just be to get an inexpensive desk fan and keep the fan pointed on the router.

You could get a cheap pc case, with a power supply (with an integral fan,) installed. Put the router inside and turn on. Might be efficient enough.

Or you could use a laptop cooler if your router has a usb port to supply the power.

The problem with refrigeration is condensation. Water and electronics don't mix so well.
