loosing keyboard on wakeup from sleep

I love the quick sleep and wake up, but it has a few
problems.

Using a PowerBook 2000 model (firewire) 500Mhz.
If I plug in a usb mouse (yes, the puck) I loose all
keyboard response. The mouse and the trackpad both still
work but the keyboard does not respond. Removing the mouse
does not help. Sleep and reawake does not help. Logout
does not help. Only shutdown and restart gets the keyboard
back.

I have also sometimes had this problem after a prolonged
(overnight) sleep with no change to the mouse at all.
Just go to sleep and when awake in the morning, no keyboard.
 
Running a PB G3, 192 MB RAM.

2 HFS + partitions. 5GB OS X, 1GB OS 9

Reformatted from HFS+/UFS last night. Had tons of resource forking problems, but trackpad worked on wake from sleep.

After reformat, trackpad doesn't work on wake from sleep. Any suggestions?
