Losing CD Drive

iMac Dual 2.0 17'
Occasionally, my computer does not recognize that I have a CD/R drive, When I press the eject key, it does nothing. Apple profiler does not recognize that I have the drive. Consequently I have to shut-down and reset the computer. I never turn my system off, I use sleep mode. Any suggestions on what could be going on?

Did you replace the stock drive with a 3rd party drive? If so, did you set the jumpers identically to the old drive? Sounds like a jumper problem to me.

Could be a failing drive, in need of repair or replacement. Is it still under warranty?

What happens if you open iTunes and push the eject button? Is there a hole on the drive's face you can stick an unbent paperclip into?
