Lost File Recovery - Help Needed

Hi all,
I'm running OSX v 10.4.8 and have lost the data files for an Audacity sound recording file. The file type is "au".

I don't know how it happened. Is there a way, outside of purchasing expensive 3rd party software, to recover these files?

I tried EasyFind, but it didn't find my files.
I do think they were deleted. I downloaded a trial version of "Boomerang" data recovery software, and it found the files, but to save and access them I have to throw down $179 to buy the software. I was hoping to avoid this.
Any other ideas out there?

When Leslye inadvertently lost a gig-card worth of pix, I tried
File Salvage from Subrosasoft.com. It found all the pix (She stopped
using her Mac as soon as she realized what she had done), and it
was a mere $80 to activate the recovery feature. Lots cheaper than
a divorce. And less paperwork.
