Lost with iMac and Linksys

Is it just me or is Linksys not very Mac-friendly? For one thing, they don't have any specific Mac support topics. Nice. And this doesn't help me because I am not a Mac user! Basically, the house I live in has an iMac that is currently hooked up to a cable modem (and I want to network that to a PC upstairs in the same house). I figure of course, the linksys needs to start there. I got myself a Linksys Wireless-B Router (BEFW11S4) and a Linksys Wireless-B USB Network Adapter. Thought I was going about it the right way, but who knows....

Linksys provides you with an ethernet cable, and the instructions tell you to connect it to the ethernet port on the computer. Well...currently the cable from the modem is in that spot, there is not another ethernet port on the computer. So, I took the cable from the modem, put that in the "internet" port on the router, and had the ethernet cable provided by linksys into the port on the computer. This sounds right- no? The instructions say if the green light continues to flash, go to troubleshooting, because obviously the internet is not communicating or whatever. Well I did that and don't see anything mac-related to help me, so...I'm lost. Then not to mention, you have configure the darn thing. I'm lost there too. But I obviously really shouldn't configure until I've got that internet connection going...no?

And when I insert the CD-Rom, all I can view is the pdf document of the user's guide...is that all I need? For some reason I can't open any of the other applications. It's really strange.

Anyone here have the time to give me a quick solution? And guide me in the right direction if I have this all wrong? Did I even buy the right router/adapter? As you can tell I am 100% clueless here. I thought it was a simple plug & play!

Thanks so much!

I would say your on the right track... Does your router have a websetup. normally this is something like 192.0.0.1 or whatever address your instructions say is the default. The thing here is that you need to setup the Router to connect to your ISP.. without it you are probally going to go nowhere....

I have this same setup in my apartment so if you need help you can just post here. Ill check back.

Yes the router does have a websetup...and I was about to do that but it's all greek to me! The problem I was having was that it obviously wasn't communicating with the internet...on the router, there is a green light for "internet" that continuously blinks...and it never stops, and it's supposed to. I was trying to find out why and how to fix it but linksys doesn't have any helpful mac support. Not sure where I'm going wrong or where to begin...

Thanks!

Cable Modem to WAN port on the Router. Wired machine to a LAN port on the router.

Links doesn't support Macs, but it's just a Router and works with any connection. This just means if you call for tech support, most of their techs will tell you they don't support macs, but some of their techs are very Mac knowledgeable about Macs.

The links setup page should be 192.168.1.1

So once I do the setup page I should be ok? The blinking internet light will stay lit and I'll have a connection?

What exactly am I filling in on that page anyway? It looks so foreign to me. Do I have to do anything really?

Not sure what this means either: "Cable Modem to WAN port on the Router. Wired machine to a LAN port on the router." I guess I will once I'm home working on the router and imac!

Sorry for all the questions....I am honestly lost here! Appreciate your help!

You may not have to do anything to the setup page. Try connecting with both machines before changing anything.

I don't have this router, but you should have one blinking lite. My Netgear has a lite that always blinks.

If you have a 4 port wireless router, one port will be a WAN (Wide Area network) port. This is where the cable modem plugs in. They will be marked. The LAN (Local Area Network) ports are where you connect your wired machines.

at the least whatever login information that you use for your ISP needs to be in the configuration of your router... her i cant help much... I use DSL and have never setup for cable....You need to know if you use PPPoE or whatever cable uses to manage your connection.... You should be able to find most of the setup information in the documents that came with your ISP setup.... or you can just steal them from the machine that was connected all the time... and dont forget to tell the imac not to log in... once you have this working it is a network.... no need to logon the router does it for you.... just set all the tcp/ip settings to auto and you should be online....

This isn't correct for most cable ISPs. Nothing is required to be entered.
Cable doesn't use PPPoE.
