lot of problems with parallels

Dear experts,
I have a MacBook with MacOs Tiger. I installed Parallels, and I tried to install WInXp from parallel, but it didn't work. It took an unreasonable amount of time (after one night it still didn't complete the installation). So I installed WinXp via Boot Camp, creating a partition. If I use it from the startup, it works well, but if I try to use it through parallels, it is very slow, very difficult to work with. In addition, the coherence mode doesn't work: if I give the command "use coherence" it simply ignores my command. And also, when I start the parallels virtual machine, the WinXp partition is no more seen by the MacOs.

Are these normal behaviours?

Thanks,
Massimiliano

You need to supply a little more information.

Which MacBook? How much RAM? How much disk space? What version of Tiger?

Coherence only works once Parallels Tools are installed on Windows XP. I'm not sure how that works with a BootCamp drive.

Sorry.
It's a MacBook Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz, 2 GB Ram, HD 160 GB (I set 20 GB for the WinXp Partition).
Thanks

No reply so I'll throw a few things out in case you haven't solved the problem:

Make sure in the Parallels settings that the virtual machine has at least 512 MB of RAM. Once you boot the virtual machine with Win XP running, click the "Add Parallels Tool" menu option (or whatever it's called). This will start a Wizard (R) in Windows that will install Parallels Tools. Once you reboot the virtual machine, I think you'll find the performance significantly better.

Good luck, let us know how it works out, and remember: "Windows Wizard" is an oxymoron.

I don't understand: I selected "Instal Parallels Tools" under the Actions menu, but it doesn't look to do anything special... What should I expect to see once I select "Install Parallels Tools"?
Thanks,
Massimiliano

Make sure you have started Windows XP. When you see the Windows desktop, and everything is done loading, Select "Install Parallels Tools". You should see Windows start the installation Wizard (R) (I'm making fun of the wizards.)

Anyway, the Installation Wizard window will open and it will indicate that it's installing Parallels Tools. After that, it should be more responsive. If this isn't working for you, ???

The next step would be to check Parallels support to see if others are having this problem and what solution they may have discovered. If you don't find anything, fire off an email to Parallels support for help.

Unless anyone has any other ideas? Anyone? Anyone?

Good luck.

Doug

The wizard does not appear. I think I will install my Parallels, but before I have to solve a new problem. Now my parallels is so slow that I cannot even turn off the windows: when I click on "start" the sand-glass stays there for minutes (also half an hour), and then when I click on "turn off" I have the sand-glass for hours and nothing happens. The problem is that if I kill the parallels process from MacOs, I cannot access the Windows partition from BootCamp, since it says that it has an error. I think I shoudl switch off the WIndows in the VM in the right way, but I cannot.
Help!
How can I solve this problem?
Thanks,
Massimiliano
