low memory space

My computer has apparently run out of memory space.

I have 27,000 pics in iphoto so I'm guessing that is the problem but I was told that I probably have a game or a program on here that is taking up too much memory space. I am such an inexperienced mac user, that I don't know how to determine which programs are using the most memory space so I can delete some things and I don't want to delete something I might find useful and I don't know what half the programs on my applications do. Any suggestions?
 
Then you are a prime example for a Firewire or better (whatever you Mac can take), format for Mac OS X Extended (the same as you internal hard disk). Hook it up, fire up iPhoto and go to the iPhot menu item "Help". In the Help search field search for the term "move library" and in drop down select 'Moving you iPhoto Library ....'. It will walk you through how to move the Pictures library to another location like a fast external firewire hard disk.
