.mac email alternatives (hosting)

Completely fed up with .mac I am. I also own my own domain that I am not taking advantage of right now (unhosted). Question is, has anyone found any ROCK SOLID (won't close in a few months) hosting companies that will provide an email only solution at a good price (mac friendly?)

I'd be very curious to hear alternatives. My .mac is about to expire and apparently I can't get the $10/year email only account if I'm not a full .mac member. So stupid on their part... of course, if the servers worked better it wouldn't be a problem. $100 / year for email is a bit much, though, as I don't really use any other of .mac's functionality.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've been using Mail.com for years. You get a 10 MB box (online) for the cost of looking at a few ads, and for a few bucks per month you can get no ads, POP3 support, and more stuff. And there are a truckload of domain names you can use; mine, for example, is cliffhanger.com.

I'll check out both of those services.
A friend of mine just recommend blast.com and freeshell.org (in case anyone else is looking for hosts).

I actually forgot that I have a free account over there as a trial. I've found their hosting to be pretty reliable (and very cheap when the trial runs out). Anyone else tried them?

Technical questions: in Mail.app, I've setup tons of IMAP folders on .mac mail. They are also archived offline locally. Now, when I cancel .mac, Mail won't do anything stupid like erase my local folders, will it? That would be such ashame. I have everything cloned with CCC, but I'd like to avoid that occurance!

When you delete an account from mail, it will remove all the associated mailboxes, unless they are under 'On My Mac' (at least this has been my experience, so your inbox, send items, etc are gone).

If you want to keep the contents of those folders, you can do two things.
1 create new mailboxes under 'On My Mac' and drag the contents of your .mac account folders to the newly created mailboxes.
2 drag the folders from mail.app to the desktop. This will create a backup copy of the mbox file. You can them import the mbox file and it will be automatically put under 'On My Mac'

Two SECONDS ago, I just posted a question about how to do this in the Mac Software forum. Thank you SO much. I'm going to try it right now.
