Hi all, thanx for the incredibly fast response to my last query :) - however as these things go, i have another (should stop meddling is probably the best advice here) - When i log in to my user account, my mac help doesnt function at all, no welcome picture, no answers, if i type a word in the search, it just searches endlessly with no result, if i however long in to my girls account, it works as normal, how can i change this and get my help to work once again..?

thanks in advance - any help greatly appreciated

Jake

Hi deejayhypno

For some reason when i open mac help in Tiger (10.4.3), mine is blank and wont search until i click on the home (house icon) button over on the left of the pop up box.

Initially try clicking this to see if it kicks it into life.

hi mate, hmm, well, ive tried the house button, it does display the 'welcome to Tiger' screen, but still when i search for say 'computer' or 'network' - no joy...

- i remember reading an article about deleting unused language packs to free disk space, i did that, deleting dutch and german etc, and i think thats when this trouble started, if that sheds any light at all ...

Use Onyx to "Reset MacHelp"

If you have suddenly lost access to the Mac OS X Help system in a multi-user setting - usually after a system update - you may want to check your User restriction settings.

Look in System Preferences under Accounts, and then the capabilities menu. If a user is restricted to use only certain applications, Mac OS X will not allow you to launch the help system, as it is treated like any other normal application.

If you do indeed intend to restrict user access to certain applications, you can add the Help Viewer application to the list of accessible applications by navigating to /System/Library/CoreServices/Help/Viewer.app in the System Preferences Users pane.

Help not working;

Go to User/Library/Preferences and trash the following files:

com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpui.plist
com.apple.helpviewer.plist

Next go to User/Library/Caches and delete the com.apple.helpui folder.

Tiger

The Help Viewer preferences and/or caches file corruption may cause this problem.

Delete the following files, then restart and try Help.

HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
HOME/Library/Cashes/com.apple.helpui (folder)
