mac login password

hi there,
I'm posting here in the hope that someone might be able to help.
I've been a PC user for 12/13 years and have no idea what I'm doing on a mac, never the less....My organization was donated an older Imac green ( limey) with dvd rom slot wich we intended to put downstairs in the youth group room for the kids to use.
the anonymous person who donated it however, did not leave a password, software disks or any other way to get into the system.
this has left me frustrated and them disappointed as I've tryed just about everything possible to get past the login scree, ( removed the battery, tryed a vast amount of keystrokes at boot-up, removed the hard drive etc.).
still, all I get when I boot up is this login screen with the administrator password request and some other user name....
is there a way, to bypass this whole thing, ( short of giving up and throwing the machine out the window...) and if there is....can I create another user account so next login I won't have to tear my hair out?...( there isn't much left to tear out!!!)
thanks in advance to all who can help.... :o

It pretty much depends on getting - or at least borrowing - the MacOS install disks from someone. Your local Apple store will be able to dig them out for you if you can't find them anywhere else.

Once you've got the OS install discs, you can load them into the drive and bootup the machine while holding the "C" button to force the Mac to boot from CD. You can then reset the master password from the installer menu, or just save yourself some effort and reinstall the OS from scratch.

he's right, at this point, with out the password, there is nothing you can do but reset it with the os install disks, or reformat the drive.
btw that was not very nice of the person to donate the imac pw protected.

hav eyou tried to log in leaving the the password field empty? or writing "admin" or something similiar?
