Mac Mail and Mime

Suddenly Mail has started treating all attachments and files cut and pasted into a message very strangely. Every attachment has a Mime file in addition to the original attachment and the content of a cut/paste into the message appears as a Mime file. As far as I know I have not changed any of the settings in the last week.
Mail is Version 2.1 (752/752.2)
Running OS 10.4.10
G5 Mac Dual 2.7 Ghz, 2GB RAM

Any thought on what might be happening?

No, nothing like that. It simply started out of the blue a few days ago

That's odd, it doesn't show up on System Update. Do you know where I can download it?

My mail is 2.1 as well, with no updates offered. You may want to try moving the preference file located in /users/<you>/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
to the desktop while Mail is closed, then restarting Mail. You can move it back if it doesn't help - this file saves preferences for Mail.
