Mac mini start up issues

I have had my mac mini for almost two years now. I have had no major issues.

Four days ago, it started to be a little too slow and i decided to restart it. After i did, and without any reason, it restarted in Safe boot mode. I figured something was wrong so i backed up my data and proceeded to format.
I entered the disk and followed the usual steps. When i was asked to restart, i did. This is the first time you are asked to restart after you insert the Install CD 1.
Then, i got the usual gray screen for a while, and that was immediatly followed by this message: PANIC: Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI". The machine also asked to restart it by pressing the button in the back. I did that a few times, always with the same result.
I then decided to boot the computer from the CD by holding the C key. That was fun and for a second i believed that it was going to work. After reinstalling everything i restarted the computer and guess what happened:
I am in safe boot again.
I have a mac mini 1.66GHz, 512 MB ram, OS X 10.4.5.

Since i have never had much problems with my macs (this is why i love them) i don't know much about them. Please help me!
 
Run Apple Hardware Test from the install disc 1 that came with the mac - D at boot for an Intel Mac and alt for a PPC. After selecting language, ctrl-L will take it to loop mode, and hten select teh extended test for at least a few hours. It will stop until stopped (loop ended with same shortcut, no gui for it), or when it finds an error. -- a few hours of testing should effectively at least rule out any hardware issues.
 
Okay, I did as you said, and nothing seamed wrong with the hardware. I then restarted the computer and....
IT WORKS FINE.
I have no idea how that works, but it does.

Np. You may also want to check htat it has enough free space. OS X needs generally at least 15 % of the hard drive space to be empty for best performance and system functionality.
