mac newbee please help

Hi all im a comlete newbee when it comes to mac i have just percested a old imac g3 its great but im used to using windows and i carnt seem to find eny how to guides on using mac os 8.1 i dount know how to install programs or enything like that im in a bit of a mess and dount know what to do or were to go for help i need to lern my way arround the os eny ideas on were to start?

allso what should a mac file look like shood it be .dmg or . bin or sit these formats im not sure of only the bin allso i have no idea on how to open a app.
 
installng programs:
you need compatible programs i dont know were from good luck finding them
and i dont know what codec they will be compressed in eg. zip .dmg .exe.

Zip:
Double click > find a program > drag to hard drive> applications.
and it will be installed

dmg:
Double click > auto opens a disk image on desktop> click that > find a program > drag to hard drive> applications

or insted of find a program > drag to hard drive> applications
you double click the box and go through the wizard

exe:
Osx dosent run them stupid files

sit:
Double click > click the cardboard box and go through the wizard
 
Well, you've come to the right place. Check the HOW-TO section for anything you need helpful steps with.

As for the specs on that Mac, you might want to go to the Apple Menu (located at the top left) and select the Apple System Profiler. That will tell you everything you need to know about your iMac. Then heaad to Low End Mac to find out what your options are for that iMac.

He's using OS 8.1.

No .dmg files in that system.

there were disk imaiges in os 8.1. i opened them all the time on my quadra 800. the only problem is it requires an older version. the ones you get today will not open. as far as sw, try www.pure-mac.com. thats were i got alot of the sw i used on my quadra. as far as upgradeing the os, i would not use tiger, os x 10.4, the imac can't handle it. try jaguar instead, os x 10.2. that's the hightest i'd go on a g3 imac.
 
to mac.g3, CJ MAC OS X IPOD's post is referring to OSX, which is a completly different system. few of those tips will actually work. to open applications, open up the harddrive on the desktop, and browse into the applications folder. launch what you will, much like windows. for a shortcut to recent programs, or common programs, look in the apple menu in the top left, undder applications. the apple menu was the basis for the start menu in windows, and there are many similarites. sleep/restart, shut down etc are under the 'special' menu. in the help menu, turn on Bubbles. this will help you.

when you have programs open, they are all sorted under the menu in the top right. click on this menu to switch, or for other options like hide.

all the common settings co0ntrol panels are in the pull out bar along the bottom left corner of the screen.

play around and have fun exploring this system. if it feels a bit dated, it's because it is, it's around windows 95-98 level, wheras OS 10.0 through 10.4 is much more modern, and superior to windows xp in a number of areas. it would be worthwhile planning to upgrade to these, and i would reccomend 10.3 Panther. this may require some updating of the hardware/firmware of the imac to bring it up to speed.

Yep -- but they were different disk images. Disk Images that are compatible with the classic Mac OS have an extension of .IMG. Disk Images that are only compatible with Mac OS X have the extension of .DMG.

If you encounter a disk image with the extesnsion .DMG, most likely it does not contain any applications that are compatible with OS 8.1. I believe there are utilities that allow .DMG files to be "mounted" in the classic Mac OS, but, most likely, they do not contain any applications that can be run under Mac OS 8.1.
