Mac OS 10.1 Update

First of all let me start by indicating that I am new to OS X.
I have been charged with installing it, testing, and providing documentation on using it with the printers that my company manufactures and sells. Now about the problems I'm having.

I am attempting to run OS X on an early G3 Tower. When I install OS 10.0 from the CD it installs just fine. Upon trying to update to 10.1 it fails miserably. I have tried to first run all of the updates using software update. I have tried by just updating directly to 10.1. Every time it gets all the way through the install and fails near the end. The failure occurs in the area of cleaning up files. Once this happens I am unable to boot back to the original version (10.0). I am somtimes unable to even boot to my other drive which still has OS 9.2.1 installed on it. This mac has two drives, 1 - 4.0 gb ATA, 1 - 9.2 gb SCSI. The system runs fine from either one with version 10.0 or 9.2.1. I am at a loss at this point, I have tried three different copies of the CD.

Is this a blue/white G3, or one of the beige towers?

There is a firmware update for the SCSI card that shipped with blue/white G3s. I don't know if it would make any difference, but it might be a good place to start.

Go to asu.info.apple.com and search for 60409

You should also run Disk First Aid (or your favorite disk utility) before installing if you haven't already.

The G3 is a Beige tower not the blue and white. I have already tried to find firmware updates for it but have found none. I have also run Disk First Aid on the drives just to make sure everything was OK. This system is a G3 233 w/288 mb Ram. The only add-in card is a USB card. I aslo have three external devices, 1 - Zip, 1 - Jazz, 1 - CDR, all on a SCSI chain. The two insternal drives are as follows. 1 - 4 gb original apple ATA drive, 1 - 9.2 SCSI drive. I even tried to install with just the original internal ATA drive without anything extra installed. Run as I have tried to install without having it installed od any external drives connected. I have created a System Profiler Report if you think you can find something in it to help figure this issue out. A much nicer scenario would be if I could just get the boss to sign off on a newer system. We all know how budgets are these days.

I had a similar problem with a beige G3/300 tower at my work place. I ended up doing 2 things but don't know which one actually fixed the problem as i changed both variables at one time:

- Unplug your scsi devices and stick a terminator in the scsi card.
- Reformat your hard drive so the first partition is less than 8GB. The ReadMe states that on Beige boxes, if you partition the drive, the OS X install must reside on a partition which is the first partition of the drive and also less than 8GB. The readme also seems to indicate that drives larger then 8GB are fine as long as they are not partitioned, but I would split the drive anyway just to be safe.

Beige 10.1.1 Server running great!
