Mac OS 10.4.11 system kernel panic

have an imac running OS10.4.11. I started getting kernel panics upon login screen continually. I booted up with Disc Warrior disc and wanted to rebuild the directory. It found damage in the wrapper volume which it repaired. It continued with rebuilding the directory, and during this process, I got a kernel panic. I forced the computer to shut down, started it back up, it actually got past the log in screen. I clicked disc utility and when I clicked on the HD, it kernel panicked. The next time I started up, I was able to access programs. I decided to run Disc Warrior again, this time not booting from it, it went thru the process fine. Thought I was up and running, now today, after starting up, getting past the login screen, I clicked on Firefox and got a kernel panic.
At this point, should I try an archive & install? Not sure how to proceed from here. Thanks.
 
I'd guess safe boot (boot with shift down) would also panic?
Do you have the discs that came with the Mac? Run the hardware test from them.
And if you could find panic.log from the system that would probably also give more clue of what's the exact failure...
What version of Disc Warrior by the way, and which iMac?
 
I am only commenting since the very same thing happened to me a long time ago--I had a faulty memory chip. TechTool did not diagnosis it--but the techs on-line suggested it.

The very, very, very cheap Memtest found it in seconds. Replaced it--under warranty--and voila!

I am not saying that is the problem, but you could avoid a lot of hassle by ruling that out! To my limited Non-Guru experience, kernal panics suggest a hardware problem rather than a volume/software problem.
