Mac OS 11?

Androo

Yeah, Androo.
hey, it has to come sooner or later. You cant keep going on with 10.9999, can you? I heard from some stupid magazine or something that it won't be called OS 11, it'll be like GoMac or something. Though no one has looked this far ahead, people still talk about it.
though this is off topic, what was that old Apple OS that wasnt a public release?

The would-have-been-after-OS-8 OS was called Copland. OS 9 and X came and replaced that.

I wish they'd've renamed Mac OS X something other than Mac OS since it is an entirely different operating system. Meh.

MacOS 8 was never called Copland. Copland was Apple's first attempt at a modern operating system. It never really saw the light of day. I have the developer release somewhere in the maximized entropy that is my filing cabinet. I never did install it, the developer release required two computers to run it, one as a debugging console if I remember correctly.

After Apple spun it's wheels for quite a while they realized that Copland wasn't going anywhere, which resulted in the aquisition of NeXT and the rehire of Steve Jobs.

MacOS 8 was never Copland, but Copland was the code name for the OS that was originally intended to be MacOS 8. The MacOS 8 that became reality was much less ambitious.

I think you got 8 and nine mixed up mister ;) Copland was a beta, people dubbed it 8.7 or something, os 9 was intended to look something like copland, but apple dropped copland, made some little changes to 0s 8 and made is os 9 and then kicked into gear on os X. At least that is my understanding of it, I wasn't really around back then.

What about: Mac OS NeXt ... :D

I don't think they will stick with the roman numerals (Mac OS XI ...), but I definitely think they will keep an 'X' in the name... Mac OS Xtra? LOL :p No, don't think so ... AppleX ... perpleX ... MaX ... no, no, no ... X-11? Mmhhh ... The confusing thing is that the OS was always simply a number (exept for Lisa) ... Mac OS X is the first time IIRC that they put a pun in the name ... What will they do neXt? Stick with numbers? Give them names? We all know 10.2 as Jaguar ... wil they keep internal codenames as official names? Or side by side (more or less like Jaguar)? I don't see them doing anything like GoMac or SuperOS either ... rather 'PowerOS' ... but then everybody would wonder whether there would be a 'iOS' too ...

I was there, though. I have a demo CD from Apple that shows some 'Copland' technologies. The CD is called 'System 8 Demo CD'. Apple started to talk about System 8 (Copland) at around the time when System 7.5 was in the stores. System 7.5.1 was the first build to incorporate the 'Mac OS' moniker.

Gil Amelio killed the Copland project and Apple bought NeXT. Then Gil was kicked out.

The code name for Mac OS 8 was 'Tempo', and the first beta builds were still called Mac OS 7.7.

If they didn't call it Mac OS X... we'd have to change our website name... otherwise we'd be living in the past....

ScottW,

You just brought up an interesting question for the moderators... :) What happens to this board when OS 11 comes out in say 2 years or before?

we'll have a big barbecue in front of apple HQ and tell stories of "the good old days". :D

Hmmm... What do you think the code name will be... Panther is 10.3... so maybe cougar for OS 11... lol :D

I'm betting.... since steve is so adiment about calling it "Mac Oh Es Ten" [as opposed to Mac Oh Es Ex] that it will be "Mac Oh Es Eleven"

...

I thought Pink was Apples first attempt at a "modern" operating system, followed by Taligent w/IBM, then Copland (remnants of Taligent)?

wooooow i never looked in this thread! I made it, then i thought it would die out so i didn't bother....
I hope it will have only a nifty name like Tranquillity, or Nucleus, or Element, something of that sort.... Mac OS 11 couldn't be the name of it, since there was such a cool, slick new name for 10. Maybe that's why apple hasn't moved onto a new os yet, and are still doing the whole 10.3 and 10.3.1 type thing with the second decimal place as a new OS. Maybe that's why they won't release 11 for a while: because of the name!
I hope 11 won't come for a while, since i like the aqua appearance, and they might make something worse for 11. Only time can tell....
