Mac Os X 10.3.9 Black Screen

We have an iMac G4 (1 GHz 768MB RAM; 80 GB Harddisk; 17”TFT) and a Power Mac G4 (M5183, 400MHz 256MB RAM;80 GB Harddisk) both are running with Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Both macs cannot be properly started from time to time. Per example after a restart the mac starts fan / harddisk etc. but the screen remains black. Nothing helps than anymore. (Pressed the Command, Option, P, and R keys simultaneously – no effect; reinstalled RAM no effect; etc.; the only solution seems to be to disconnect the mac from the power and wait for a while – some hours or days).

We have the following checked: logicboard / memory / harddisk / graphiccard / monitor / temperature / power supply / cables – everything fine. We have disconnected all external devices (such as external harddisk). We have reinstalled Mac OS X. The problems persist.

After a while (per example 2 days) – the mac starts without any problem and after a while (sometimes days – sometimes hours) the start-up problem comes again.

What could be the problem? Is this still a problem of the Mac OS X 10.3.9 version (according to apple some black screen problem should be already solved with the version 10.3.8).

Is there a newer firmware available?

We have the following firmware installed:

iMac G4: 4.5.9f1
Power Mac G4 (Model 5183): 1.1.2f2

We did not experience similar failures with the same hardware with Mac OS X 10.1.x versions / Mac OS X 10.2.x versions.

Many thanks in advance for your answer.

Marcel
